Amman, Jordan – At the start of the 2024 academic year, the second cohort of students enrolled in the "Hydrogen Technology" program began their studies at the German Jordanian University (GJU). This year, the university welcomed a new group of students as part of its collaborative partnership with the University of Applied Sciences in Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) in Germany. The academic activities of the program were officially launched on October 6, 2024, with a special welcome ceremony for the new students.
The event was attended by Prof. Dr Ala'aaldeen Al-Halhouli, President of GJU, who extended a warm welcome to the new students. Joining the ceremony were Prof. Dr Reiner Finkeldey and Prof. Dr Malek Al-Sharairi, Vice Presidents of GJU, as well as Prof. Dr Achim Förster , Vice President of THWS for International Relations and Teaching, who participated virtually.
Also present at the ceremony was Stefan Bienefeld, Head of Cross-Border Education at the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), who emphasized the significance of this program within DAAD’s broader portfolio of international educational initiatives. "We look forward to the continued progress of these innovative academic programs that open new horizons for higher education," Bienefeld stated.
Introduction to Key Academic Partners
During the event, new students were introduced to the key academic partners of the program. Ms. Jacqueline Rogler, Head of the German Language Center at GJU, provided an overview of the intensive German language courses students will need to complete during the preparatory year. She explained that students are required to reach a B1 level in German before transitioning to THWS for the remainder of their studies.
Dr. Osama Saadeh, from the Faculty of Natural Resources Engineering and Management at GJU, also presented an overview of the program, which prepares students to become qualified hydrogen engineers proficient in three languages and dual nationalities.
Farewell to the First Cohort
A highlight of the ceremony was the farewell to the first cohort of students who successfully completed the preparatory year at GJU. This milestone marked their transition from GJU students to THWS students, where they will now embark on the next phase of their academic journey. Prof. Dr. Ralf Roßkopf , of THWS, presented certificates to the students and officially welcomed them to the university.
Interaction with Second-Year Students
The event was organized by the Campus GATE team, the cross-border education initiative overseeing programs at both GJU and THWS. This team provided new students with the opportunity to interact with second-year students, benefiting from their experiences and gaining insights into what lies ahead in the coming years. This interaction served to motivate and prepare the newcomers for the challenges of the program.
Closing of the Event
The day concluded with a joint lunch and a guided tour of the high-water tower at GJU. Looking ahead, both universities are committed to deepening their collaboration, particularly with the start of the second cohort. The two institutions aim to explore new avenues for cooperation in 2025 and beyond.
