Under the patronage of the Minister of Environment, Dr. Ayman Suleiman, the German Jordanian University (GJU), represented by the Deanship of Student Affairs (DSA), launched on Thursday the initiative “Towards a Clean Jordan,” with the participation of representatives from official environmental institutions, as well as members of the academic and administrative staff and university students. The initiative aims to enhance environmental awareness and promote sustainability concepts and volunteer work among young people.
Minister Suleiman, during his patronage of the event, emphasized that the initiative represents a practical model of effective partnership between academic institutions and government bodies. He noted that it reflects an advanced awareness of the importance of environmental protection and positive environmental behavior, stressing that the Ministry of Environment values supporting such qualitative initiatives that contribute to building a socially responsible and awareness-based culture.
Suleiman said: “What we are witnessing today in terms of student initiatives and environmental projects confirms that Jordanian youth possess the awareness and determination to bring about positive change. This drives us at the Ministry of Environment to continue supporting awareness programs and pioneering initiatives that enable youth to actively participate in shaping and implementing sustainable environmental solutions.”
He added that the “Towards a Clean Jordan” initiative is directly aligned with the executive program of the National Strategy for Cleanliness and Reduction of Random Waste Disposal for the years 2026–2027, which was launched as part of national efforts to enhance field environmental action and spread a culture of cleanliness and community responsibility.
Suleiman further pointed out that the success of the executive program depends on integration of roles and genuine partnerships among various institutions, stressing that universities represent an incubating environment for innovation and a platform for preparing young leaders capable of driving change and embedding a sustainable environmental culture.
For his part, the President of the University, Prof. Alaaldeen Al-Halhouli, emphasized that the university places sustainability and environmental issues among its strategic priorities and seeks to prepare an aware generation capable of making a positive impact on society through high-quality student initiatives.
Al-Halhouli said that cleanliness is a collective responsibility and a daily culture that must be instilled among youth, noting that the initiative aligns with the executive program of the National Strategy for Cleanliness and Reduction of Random Waste Disposal, reflecting the importance of integrating the roles of educational, governmental, and community institutions in promoting positive environmental behavior.
Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Farah Al Atrash, highlighted the importance of the initiative in enhancing student participation in national and environmental issues and in promoting a culture of volunteerism and environmental sustainability among youth.
The event included a presentation on the executive program of the cleanliness strategy and reduction of random waste disposal, in addition to a video showcasing student projects and initiatives in sustainability and environmental protection. It also featured innovative student ideas offering practical solutions to environmental challenges.
The event concluded with a dialogue session that brought together the Minister of Environment, Dr. Ayman Suleiman, and the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Farah Al Atrash, along with a representative of the Royal Department for Environmental Protection. The session was moderated by the President of the University’s Sustainability Club, student Yaman Ghozlan, where participants discussed the role of youth in environmental protection and promoting sustainable practices, emphasizing the importance of continuing environmental initiatives aimed at building a more aware and sustainable society.
On the sidelines of the event, Minister of Environment Dr. Ayman Suleiman sponsored a comprehensive cleanup campaign in the Al-Faisaliyah area in Madaba Governorate, with broad participation from official and community institutions, including Madaba Governorate, Al-Faisaliyah District Directorate, Madaba Municipality, and the Ministries of Public Works, Education, Agriculture, Endowments, Tourism, and Culture, in addition to community police, the Royal Department for Environmental Protection, tourism police, the German Jordanian University, EFS Facility Management Services, Vision Amman for Treatment and Recycling, and a number of social activists and local dignitaries.
The campaign comes as part of the Ministry of Environment’s ongoing efforts to implement the executive program of the National Strategy for Cleanliness and Reduction of Random Waste Disposal for the years 2026–2027, and within the framework of the National Environmental Awareness Plan. It aims to spread and embed environmental concepts across all segments of society, encourage citizens to maintain the cleanliness of public spaces, parks, recreational and archaeological sites, reduce the phenomenon of random waste disposal, and ultimately achieve the slogan “Towards a Cleaner Jordan.”
