From November 12–20, 2024, a German Jordanian University (GJU) delegation participated in the Oman Workshop Week, part of the DAAD-funded Digitalization of Cultural Heritage project. Hosted by the German University of Technology (GUtech) in Oman, the event united academics and students from Europe and the region to explore digital tools for preserving cultural heritage.

Representatives of the GJU were Mr. Muhammad Al Nusairat, Industrial Professor at SABE, and two students, Mr. Safi Amacher and Mrs. Sara Majdi. Dr. Jennifer Gronau, Director of GJU’s International Affairs Department, strengthened institutional ties with GUtech’s International Office, led by Dr. Sabriya Al-Naamani.

Exploring Oman’s Heritage:

Workshops were set against Oman’s rich cultural backdrop, including UNESCO World Heritage sites like Bahla Fort. Visits to Old Al Hamra, Nakhl Fort, and the Wahiba Desert featured hands-on digitization using advanced tools like FARO scanners for 3D mapping.

Global Collaboration Through Ta’ziz Program:

The event, part of DAAD’s Ta’ziz Science Cooperation Program, led by Prof. Dr. Julia Schnitzer, emphasized global efforts to tackle challenges in cultural preservation, such as erosion and accessibility.

Outcomes and Future Prospects:

A student presentation, including GJU’s Safi Amacher, highlighted technical achievements in digitizing cultural artifacts. Dr. Gronau fostered discussions with GUtech, paving the way for future collaborations in cultural preservation and academic exchange.

Cultural Immersion:

Participants experienced Oman’s heritage through activities like hiking in Wadi Shab and camping in the desert, complementing technical workshops. GJU’s participation underscores its commitment to innovation, global collaboration, and advancing efforts in digital heritage preservation.
