2025 marks a new era of academic innovation with the official launch of Online GATE, a pioneering digital study programme jointly developed by the German Jordanian University (GJU) and its long-term strategic partner, the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS).
Online GATE introduces a flexible and future-oriented study model that allows students in Jordan, the wider MENA region and globally to enrol in bachelor’s majors hosted at GJU and fully accredited as German degrees by the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS). With its emphasis on digital transformation, interactive tools, and UNS avatar technology, the programme ensures students benefit from a truly international, practice-oriented education accessible anytime, anywhere.
Students can currently choose between two pioneering study majors:
• B.Sc. Health and Environmental Psychology
• B.Sc. Engineering Science
For students whose qualifications do not meet the requirements for university admission in Germany, GJU and THWS have developed a unique solution. They are given the opportunity to enrol in an online preparatory year at the German Jordanian University (GJU), which will specifically prepare and qualify them for the subsequent degree programmes, significantly enhancing accessibility.
The Online GATE structure combines synchronous and asynchronous learning with innovative digital tools. Students can access lectures, assignments, and resources from any location, enabling them to study according to their own schedules while maintaining academic rigour and personal interaction.
A unique highlight of the programme is the UNS avatar system, which allows students to create personalised digital avatars for interactive learning, collaborative assignments, and virtual classroom engagement — blending the strengths of digital education with the human touch.
Dr. Ziad Abu El-Rub, Director of the Centre for E-Learning and Academic Performance Improvement, German Jordanian University, stated: “Online GATE represents a breakthrough in how we imagine and deliver higher education.
By combining rigorous academic standards with advanced digital tools, including interactive platforms and AI-based learning technologies, we ensure that students experience education that is both innovative and inclusive.
This initiative opens access to German-quality education from anywhere, while strengthening Jordan’s role as a regional hub for globally connected higher education. It is a true milestone in our journey towards smart and accessible learning.”
Online GATE aligns with the vision of both universities to deliver career-ready graduates who combine theoretical knowledge with practical, global skills. The programme is built to serve students who seek international-standard education while remaining connected to Jordan’s higher education ecosystem.
Prof. Dr. Ralf Roßkopf, Academic Coordinator for Online GATE at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS), emphasized that the future of university education will be customized — for many, this means online. Education will be independent of location and time, compatible with individual circumstances, obligations, and resources — and without any compromise in quality. Online GATE embodies this vision by offering students in Jordan and the MENA region access to a truly international and future-oriented German education.
A large delegation from THWS will visit the German Jordanian University in October 2025 to reaffirm a shared vision for the future of digital higher education. This significant event will highlight the strong German-Jordanian partnership and the commitment of both institutions to advancing international collaboration and innovation in the region.
